Used Honda Motorcycles – What To Look For When Buying

July 6th, 2010

Looking to buy a used Honda Motorcycle?

In order to ensure your transaction goes smoothly with your new Honda, here are some tips and things to look for while inspecting the motorcycle.

1. Don’t always buy the first bike you come across. If you can, always bring a friend with your when checking out the new bike, preferably if he knows a thing or two about motorcycles. The second set of eyes will save you some grief down the road.

2. Check if the Honda is clean and straight. You want to make sure it hasn’t been banged up in a crash. Check down the center of the bike, pay attention to the alignment of the forks.

3. Ask if the motorcycle has been in a crash. You can also check out the handle bars, plastics, leavers, body… looking for signs of scratches and touch ups.

4. Has this bike been raced? Check for 1/16inch safety wire holes in the caliper mounting bolts.

5. Before you go.. do a bit of research on that particular model. Since this is a used Honda Motorcycle, the owner will be able to tell you how he has experienced any of the design flaws that are particular to the model.

6. Check the brakes to ensure they activate smoothly and there isn’t any pulsing when pressed.

7. Check the clutch, you are looking to ensure it releases cleanly when squeezed.

8. Gas Tank, here you are looking for rust or a white coating inside the tank – looks somewhat like milk.

9. Check the seat for obvious tears – this area is easy to fix and will show the most wear and tear. This is to be expected with a used motorcycle.

10. Battery, turn on and test all the blinkers and lights, you ensuring they work of course.

This concludes part one. Stay tuned for part two.

Should You Sell Your Honda Motorcycles to Pay Bills?

February 17th, 2009

The economy isn’t at it’s peak right now, and many people are starting to think about selling their Honda motorcycles so that they can pay bills. While this may sound like a good idea, is it really?

Motorcycles are a great way to get around cheaply. They cost a lot less than cars to run and, if you live in a warm area, can save you hundreds of dollars in gas. If you’ve already paid off your bike, or if you’re close to paying it off, it makes more sense to keep it and to use it to get back and forth to work on, especially if you don’t have to worry about bringing the children to school or daycare.

If, however, you’re living in a colder area, and can’t ride your motorcycle to work on a daily basis, or if you still have a lot of payments to go on your bike and are hurting financially, it may be a good idea to sell it. Honda motorcycles usually sell for great prices, allowing you a little more leeway on the bill front. And remember: you can always get another bike when things pick back up again.

Finding the Right Motorcycle Insurance for your Honda Motorcycles

February 5th, 2009

The one thing that many first time bike owners forget about is the insurance. In most states you need to have separate insurance for your motorcycles, and many times, the company that covers your car insurance won’t cover insurance for Honda motorcycles or any other type of motorcycles. This leaves you with a conundrum: do you go with a new carrier for your car, one that will also carry your motorcycle, or do you get a separate carrier for your motorcycle.

First things first: figure out how often you’re going to be riding your bike. If you live in an area where snow blankets the ground six months out of the year, you won’t need insurance for the entire year, so paying for it doesn’t make sense. Make sure that the company you choose allows you to pay for only the months you’ll be riding the bike. Don’t be scared to compare rates. Check with different companies to see if having them carry your Honda motorcycles along with your vehicle is going to save you money or not. The bottom line is that the more time you take and research you do, the better deal you’ll be able to uncover.

Do You Really Need a Helmet to Ride Honda Motorcycles?

February 4th, 2009

Motorcycle Helemt

Motorcycle Helemt

This is a question for the ages: do you really need to have a helmet on when you’re riding your Honda motorcycles, or can you go without one? There are many studies that say that wearing a helmet when riding can help you to save your life, but almost every rider will contest to the fact that they’re just plain uncomfortable and that they often make it more difficult to see, especially if you have a face shield that you’ve allowed to get really dirty, and that they make it harder to hear as well.

But the truth is that they’re the safest way to ride, even if you live in a state that doesn’t require you to wear a helmet. If you want your ride to be better with your helmet, make sure that you get one that’s truly comfortable, and not just the cheapest one on the shelves. Some companies make custom helmets which are usually extremely comfortable to wear, but also a bit expensive. The easiest way to get a helmet that you can enjoy is to simply try on dozens of different types of helmets – then you’ll find one that fits you perfectly so that you won’t complain about wearing it.

Taking your Honda Motorcycles to Bike Week

February 2nd, 2009

Bike Week Daytona

Bike Week Daytona

January 24, 1937, that’s the date when motorcycles first invaded Daytona Beach in Florida and when a long standing tradition began. Every year thousands of bikers travel to Daytona Beach to partake in some sun, some sand, and a whole lot of everything that has to do with bikes. Bike week this year kicks off on February 27th and lasts until March 8th (but a lot of the bikers arrive earlier and hang around later as well). If you’re planning on bringing your bike down to Daytona Beach, make sure you’ve got everything planned out right.

  • Do you have the right equipment to tow your bike on? If you’re not riding it down, make sure that you’ve got the right sized trailer, and the right tie downs so that you don’t wind up finding your bike on the middle of the highway.

  • Do you have a saddlebag? If you’re in Daytona Beach, you’ll likely find yourself riding around all day. Make sure you’ve got some way to carry around necessities on your Honda motorcycles.

Also, before you leave on your trip, make sure that all of your equipment is checked over by your mechanic, so that you don’t find yourself in Daytona Beach having to pay high prices for a mechanic if your bike breaks down.

Itching for Honda Motorcycles

January 30th, 2009

Honda GL 1000

Honda GL 1000

This is the time of year when those of us who bike and who live in the colder northern climates start cursing the snow demons for piling up our driveways with three feet of snow and start dreaming about getting back on the road on our bikes. If you’re fortunate enough to live in a warm area, where you can ride year round, send a prayer up when you’re riding around for those of us who are stuck looking at our Honda motorcycles and remembering what it feels like to ride with the wind in our face.

If you’re itching to get out and ride your Honda motorcycles, don’t think that you’re alone. There are hundreds of thousands of us who are in the same predicament, with little we can do to change it. If you find that you’re constantly dreaming about your bike, try taking the winter months to make some upgrades. You can use some of your Christmas money to make some changes that you’ve always wanted to make, either through purchasing brand new additions or used parts. Just remember: spring will come sooner than you think, and you’ll be able to ride once again.

A Long Jump!

December 10th, 2007

Jump

There are a lot of things you can do on a motorcycle. You can tour the world, you can touch all of the oceans, and you can even use it to pick up hot dates! But did you ever think about making jumps with Honda motorcycles? Not that I’d recommend it, but some people make their living off motorcycle jumping.

On New Years Eve, one lover of Honda motorcycles, Australian Honda motorcycle racer Robbie Maddison, will be doing something that no one has ever done before. He will be attempting to jump over three hundred feet on his Honda motorcycle! Those that want to see the event can go to the Rio Hotel and Casino and pay twelve dollars in order to see Maddison attempt to make the historic jump. Rhys Millen, a popular New Zealand auto racer, will be somewhere on the other half of the globe attempting to do a back flip with an off-road racing truck! These stunts are being called the Red Bull Experiment (after the sponsor). You can head to the site to purchase tickets for Maddison’s jump and to find out more about the stunts. The site can be seen here: http://www.newyearnolimits.com

Evel Knievel and Honda Motorcycles

December 5th, 2007

By now, everybody has heard that the great stuntman Evel Kneivel died on November 30th after a long battle with multiple illnesses. Knievel was 69 years old. Everybody remembers Evel for the crazy stunts he used to do for the spectators, but not every knows what Evel did before he became a famous daredevil.

In fact, Evel Knievel actually sold Honda motorcycles! In the early 1960’s, people were still wary of Honda motorcycles because World War II was still a sore subject. Evel, however, decided to try to sell Honda motorcycles as a way to support his wife and family. He actually had to offer discounts to people in order to get them to purchase Honda motorcycles. Unfortunately it was the wrong time period for Honda motorcycles and Evel had to close the store.

Honda motorcycles are regarded in a much better light now than they were almost fifty years ago. If Evel would have had his business now, he would have been able to keep it open in order to care for his family, but, then again, if he had made it, he would never have become the great daredevil that we know and love.

The Honda CBR900RR

November 29th, 2007

Last time I said that I believed the Honda Goldwing was one of the most misunderstood Honda motorcycles that there are. This time I’m going to talk about something a bit sportier – the Honda CBR900RR.

I got a chance to ride a used, 1998 Honda CBR900RR earlier this year and let me tell you, I was shocked. It combined all of the things I loved about the Goldwing in a sport, much more pleasant looking package. A motorcycle trader I know let me take one out for a test run and I was amazed at how quiet it was! Most sport bikes are much more loud, but this beautiful piece of machinery was very quiet. I then wondered how it would head on rougher roads, and took it to a more bumpy part of town.

Let me just say that I have taken some bikes on these same roads and they have made me feel a lot of pain after the ride. The Honda CBR900RR has a very stiff suspension, which kept me from jostling around too much. Although I still think the Honda Goldwing is the most misunderstood of the Honda motorcycles, I believe that my next bike may just have to be a Honda CBR900RR.

Honda Motorcycles

November 26th, 2007

Honda motorcycles have always had a good reputation. They are prime machines that always run smooth. One of my favorite types of Honda motorcycles is the Honda Goldwing. This misunderstood and often unloved motorcycle is truly a beautiful piece of machinery. Let me explain the reasons why.

First of all, the Honda Goldwing has a massive amount of power. It can handle just about anything you can throw at it. It’s also one of the most comfortable motorcycles you’ll ever find. If you’re looking for a motorcycle that you can pop wheelies on, the Honda Goldwing isn’t for you, but if you’re looking for a motorcycle to travel across the country on, the Honda Goldwing is it. I’ve even known people that have fallen asleep riding passenger on a Honda Goldwing – that’s how smooth they are. Most people look at them, however, and think that they’re boring. Boring is one thing that the Honda Goldwing is not! It’s a sleek, graceful piece of machinery that is perfect for both the beginner biker and the biker that has a little more experience under their belt. If you’re looking for Honda motorcycles that will give you a mixture of excitement and relaxation, check out the Honda Goldwing!
