The Nightmare I Saw

January 16th, 2008

I saw a nightmare the other day. It invaded my dreams and had me shivering all through the night, and today, I can’t seem to get my mind off of it. What was so horrible, you might ask? I was driving along and happened upon a beautiful 2002 Ducati sitting, rusting on the side of the road. Why, you may wonder, was this beautiful used motorcycle rusting on the side of the road? Good question. I took note of the phone number on the “For Sale” sign and called the owner to ask him.

He said that he’d purchased the Ducati a few years ago but that he wasn’t able to ride it anymore due to a disfiguring injury. Because of the price he’d paid for it, he had to recoup his losses by selling the bike. The bike, unfortunately, was getting rusty because he was unable to consistently cover it when the weather turned bad. The man lived in a small town where there weren’t many motorcycle riders and felt bad that not only would he have to lose the money he’d invested, he’d also see his beautiful bike destroyed. This is one reason that someone who is selling a used motorcycle should utilize the internet. He could have listed his Duc with a few pictures and, for the price he was asking, would likely have had the bike sold in a short matter of time. Instead, a beautiful bike is going to rot.

No Swap? Utilize the ‘Net!

January 15th, 2008

All around the nation, motorcycle enthusiasts are taking advantage of how popular motorcycle swaps are becoming. These swaps are ways for motorcycle lovers to meet up a few times a year in order to look at some of the best motorcycles in the area, swap parts, and maybe even swap cycles. But what can you do when you don’t live in an area that has a motorcycle swap? You can swap online!

There are plenty of sites online now that allow you to connect with other motorcycle lovers in order to swap the same way you do at a swap in real life. You can often find used motorcycles for much less, and even used motorcycle parts at these websites. Sure, you can’t hop on them and ride them, but you can ask for dozens of pictures to help you decide if the motorcycle you’re looking at is the one for you. Better yet, if you’re buying a used motorcycle online, you will most likely get it for a very inexpensive price. People online live all around the country, and you can take advantage of that in order to find the used motorcycle of your dream for a low, low price.

Graduation Present

January 14th, 2008

Some students want luggage for a graduation present, others want a car, and some, more adventurous students, ask for a motorcycle for their graduation. While there are some female graduates who ask for a motorcycle, most of the begging teens are boys. At that age, boys tend to be more attracted to the thrill and freedom that a motorcycle represents. The question for a parent then becomes, “should I buy them a motorcycle or not?”

To begin with, if you’re buying your student a motorcycle, make sure it is a used one. Never give a new rider a brand new motorcycle because you know, some how, some way, it’s going to be dumped. This doesn’t mean that you have to buy a raggedy motorcycle. There are plenty of used motorcycles that both look and run great! Make sure, however, if you’re buying your child a motorcycle that they know how to ride one. Go with them to take the motorcycle course (it never hurts to brush up) and help them to understand how serious an accident can be. Then, get them outfitted right, make sure they’ve passed all their classed, and buy them a used motorcycle that can last them a very long time.

Living in a Snowy Place

January 13th, 2008

I have some friends who live in extremely snowy places, and by this I mean that it takes them an hour or longer a day in order to clear out the driveway to their car out of the yard. What do you do when you’re living in a snowy climate and are a motorcycle lover? You browse! You spend the winter months looking at used motorcycles and at used motorcycle parts. The browsing can help you to while away the winter months that you’re sitting at home, waiting to go out on the open road.

The internet is one of the best inventions for riders who are stuck indoors. Not only can you take the time to map out a few new routes to try when the roads clear again, but you can spend some time looking at used motorcycles and used motorcycle parts. And wouldn’t the winter be a good time to finally tune up that old motorcycle you’ve got sitting in your garage? Instead of being frustrated that winter is curbing your ability to go out and ride the roads, take advantage of the winter weather and spend some time browsing the internet for not only used motorcycles, but for everything that has to do with your passion.

Searching Has Its Own Rewards

January 12th, 2008

If you walk through a motorcycle dealership you’re likely to find beautifully, shiny motorcycles. If you’re like most of us all you can think of it, “ooh – shiny new toys”. Sometimes, though, walking through a motorcycle dealership is a lot like browsing in an art museum. It takes all of the fun out of searching for a bargain. Looking for a used motorcycle, however, can be not only enjoyable, it can be rewarding.

You have to have the right type of personality in order to spend a lot of time looking at used motorcycles. It’s much like perusing through a yard sale that you just happen to come upon. Sometimes you find absolutely nothing and waste ten minutes of your time, while other times you might spot an extremely valuable antique or something that you’ve been trying to find for a long time. Looking for a used motorcycle, either online or through a local newspaper, can give you that same rush. Some people even find that they love the searching and finding more than they love riding! Looking for a unique used motorcycle can be a great way to while away some free time, especially since you never know what you’ll find.

Better, Faster, Stronger

January 11th, 2008

We all know that you can save money by buying a used motorcycle. After all, if you purchase a used motorcycle straight from the owner you can avoid having to pay for the dealer’s office and their other expenses. But did you also realize that you may be able to find a truly unique motorcycle when you buy used?

There are some motorcycle lovers out there who simply have the gift. We’ll call them motorcycle geniuses. These geniuses tend to make upgrades to their motorcycles that you will never find anywhere else. For instance, they could upgrade the mechanical end by putting high quality motors and other parts in the machine, or they could be brilliant at paint jobs and you may find a used motorcycle with an absolutely amazing custom paint job. Used motorcycles not only give you the option to spend less money, they give you the option to find something truly unique. So before you head to the closest local motorcycle dealership, take the time to look for a used motorcycle. Imagine how ecstatic you’d be if you were able to find a motorcycle that you love that’s been upgraded and made even better.

A Woman In A Motorcycle Shop

January 8th, 2008

It may sound like the start of a really good joke, but it’s actually a serious issue. Many women are treated differently than men are whenever they walk into a motorcycle dealers office. They are looked at as inferior and often the dealer treats them with a huge lack of respect. Most motorcycle dealers, be they a Suzuki, Honda, or Yamaha dealer, are under the misconception that women are only good as passengers.

Times have changed dealers, and you need to wake up and realize that just as many women are buying and riding bikes as men are. Women do, generally, need smaller bikes, as their legs often don’t have the strength to hold up the bike (unless, of course, they’re female bodybuilders), but some men prefer smaller bikes as well. It’s not as though motorcycle dealers need to stock neon pink bikes, as most women are more than happy to have a dark colored bike. The world of motorcycle riding is changing, with women preferring to ride beside their husbands rather than behind, and it’s time that the dealership industry came to realize it. Ladies, if you are not treated with respect by motorcycle dealers, make sure you don’t take it. Instead, start searching at other motorcycle dealerships or online to find the bike of your dream.

Being A Celebrity

January 7th, 2008

Most of us have dreamed, at one point in time or another, of being treated like a celebrity. If you’ve ever watched those celebrity reality shows, you’ll quickly see that a celebrity is treated better than any normal person can ever hope to be treated. They go to the hair dressers and get champagne and strawberries; they walk into a car dealership and the red carpet is rolled out. The truth is that you should be treated like a celebrity the instant you walk into any dealership, whether it is a motorcycle dealers office or a used car dealers office.

Good motorcycle dealers know that the way to a client’s heart is by making them feel special, and what better way to do that than by giving them the celebrity treatment. When you purchase a new or used motorcycle from a motorcycle dealer, it is the experience that will have you either going back for more or ignoring the motorcycle dealer entirely the next time you need a new bike. The next time you walk into a motorcycle dealership, look to be treated like a celebrity. If you’re not, turn around, walk out, and look for a bike elsewhere.

What You Should Expect

January 6th, 2008

After dealing with the motorcycle and customer service industry for a long time, I believe that I’m pretty knowledgeable on what you should expect the moment you walk into a motorcycle dealers office. In order to make things easy, I’ve complied a list of things that no motorcycle dealer should do. If you experience any of these situations, walk away quickly!

1. The dealer immediately hustles you to the most expensive piece on the floor and won’t bring you to the less expensive items, no matter how clear you make your case.
2. The dealer insults your taste in motorcycles and ridicules the ideas you have for your motorcycle.
3. You are belittled and made to feel as though you don’t matter.
4. It’s easy to tell that the dealer is only worried about the sale and is not worried about making sure that you are happy.

When it comes to dealing with motorcycle dealers, make sure that you are treated like a celebrity. The dealer’s check comes from your pocket, so you should be treated with respect and with dignity from the moment you walk into the door until the minute you leave, whether you sign a contract or not!

How Do You Feel?

January 5th, 2008

How do you feel when you walk into motorcycle dealers? If you’re like me, you probably feel the same way you do when you head to a car dealership. I always feels excited: as though I’m looking to find a treasure. Unfortunately, most of the time I leave the dealership feeling dejected and as though I’m worthless. The big problem with going to a dealership of any kind is that you have to deal with the dealers!

Motorcycle dealers, just like any dealers, generally get paid on commission. If they’re not paid on commission, they are given bonuses for the amount of stock they sell. This is why they push the most expensive piece of machinery that they can on you. All too often, people come out of a motorcycle dealer unhappy and feeling as though they got taken. Generally, they do! Before you start looking for a new motorcycle, do your homework. You can usually discover what a valid price for a used or new motorcycle is online, and you may even find one that you will want to purchase and have shipped to you! The rule of the day: never walk into the dealership blind, as the dealer will likely try to help you walk into a wall.
