Avoiding the Chop Shop
December 11th, 2007Anyone who’s seen car movies knows that chop shops exist for cars. But did you know that they exist for motorcycles too? Used motorcycle parts, especially those that are older or discontinued models, are always highly sought after, and some nefarious people steal motorcycles and use the parts for profit.
There are some ways that you can keep your motorcycle safe. For starters, make sure that you never, under any circumstances, leave your key in the ignition. Your bike can be stolen very quickly and chopped up into used motorcycle parts if you leave the key in the ignition. Next, make sure that you do your best to park it where it won’t be seen, and when you do have to park it in plain sight, try to lock it to another bike or something sold with a good, heavy-duty lock. If you’re in a large city and have to park in order to go into a restaurant or store, make sure you either park where you can see the bike from the building or check on it fairly frequently. Motorcycles can be hotwired fairly easily, so it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to cycles!
